Our Work

Supporting Responsible Mountain Tourism

Mountain tourism connects people, cultures, and landscapes across the world. When managed responsibly, it can create valuable opportunities for mountain communities, support the people who make tourism possible, and contribute to the protection of the environments that draw visitors to these destinations.

The International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC) works to advance responsible mountain tourism through partnerships, practical initiatives, education, and collaboration with the tourism industry and mountain communities.

Our work brings together tourism companies, local organizations, mountain workers, communities, climbers, and other stakeholders to encourage responsible practices and create lasting positive outcomes in mountain destinations.

Our approach is global. Our projects are local. Our purpose is shared.

What We Do

IMEC works to encourage positive change in mountain tourism.

Responsible Tourism Practices

We encourage tourism practices that consider the well-being of mountain workers and communities, respect local cultures, and recognize the importance of protecting mountain environments.

Worker Welfare

We support initiatives that promote the fair treatment, dignity, and well-being of the people whose work makes mountain tourism possible.

Education and Awareness

We help build understanding of responsible mountain tourism among tourism professionals, climbers, and other stakeholders, encouraging informed choices and better practices.

Community Empowerment

We support initiatives that create opportunities for mountain communities, strengthen local capacity, and help ensure that tourism can contribute to lasting community benefits.

Environmental Stewardship

We support efforts to protect mountain environments and encourage greater awareness of the environmental impacts of tourism.

Partnerships and Collaboration

We work with local organizations, tourism businesses, conservation initiatives, and other partners to develop practical responses to the opportunities and challenges facing mountain destinations.

Where We Work

A Global Purpose. Local Partnerships. Lasting Impact.

Across the world’s mountainous regions, communities face challenges ranging from the exploitation of tourism workers to environmental pressures and limited economic opportunities. IMEC works to advance responsible mountain tourism that improves lives, supports communities, and protects mountain environments.

Our work is shaped by global, political, and environmental developments. The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted mountain tourism and livelihoods worldwide, leading IMEC to focus on sustaining its flagship program in Tanzania and supporting the people who depend on it.

Our experience in Nepal and the development of our flagship program in Tanzania have strengthened our approach and provided valuable lessons in building effective initiatives with established local organizations.

Today, we are exploring opportunities to extend this work to other mountainous regions through partnerships with organizations that understand their local communities and operating environments.

Our vision is global, but lasting change begins with strong local partnerships.

Tanzania

Through our flagship program in Tanzania, IMEC supports initiatives that promote porter welfare and responsible mountain tourism. Working with our local partner, KRTO, we aim to improve working conditions and support the people whose livelihoods depend on mountain tourism.
