Monitoring Methods – Examination by the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project of the company’s performance through:

  • Porter questionnaires
  • Interviews of Porters
  • Observation of tipping procedure
  • Examination of salary distribution
  • Surveillance by a KPAP porter representative working as a porter on the climb

The Partner for Responsible Travel Program is based on the Proper Porter Treatment Guidelines established by the following Kilimanjaro stakeholders:

  • Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism
  • Tanzania National Park Authority (TANAPA)
  • Kilimanjaro National Park Authority (KINAPA)
  • Tour Operator Associations
  • Guide and Porter Associations

IMEC/KPAP advocates for the following porter treatment standards:

  • Porters are paid the minimum wage agreed upon by the government and Kilimanjaro stakeholders
  • Salaries must be paid within 2 days after the descent of a climb as per KINAPA regulations
  • A transparent tipping procedure so porters receive the full tip amount intended for them
  • Loads carried by the porter should not exceed 20 kg for the company excluding porters personal kit
  • Porters are provided with 3 meals per day and of adequate portion
  • Porters have proper shelter conditions and sleeping equipment
  • Porters are outfitted with proper gear
  • Sick or injured porters are properly cared for
